Parenting Gifted & Talented Children
May 5, 2015 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
Moms Me is proud to welcome Dr Martin Stephen co- author of the acclaimed book ‘Educating the More Able Students. What Works and Why’
We would like to invite you to join this unique Discussion:
-How do you know if your child is gifted and/or talented and what should you do about it?
-What strategies should you use if you think your child is gifted in a particular area?
-What questions should you be asking your school if they tell you that your child is gifted and talented?
-What are the challenges of raising a gifted child?
And much more…
Snippets from the book:
-Did you know that praising the more able for good work actually reduces by more than a third their performance?
-Did you know that a large proportion of the more able actively resist being identified as such?
Dr Martin Stephen was one of the youngest Heads in the UK when he was appointed Headmaster of The Perse School, Cambridge. In 27 years of Headship, he followed The Perse by becoming High Master of The Manchester Grammar School, and then became only the second man in history to hold both the ‘High Master’ posts in the UK, moving to become High Master of St Paul’s School, London. He was elected Chairman of HMC (Headmasters’ and Headmistress’s Conference) in 2004. Whilst at Manchester he broke all previous fund-raising records by raising £13m for Bursaries, and broke his own record at St Paul’s by raising £32m for new buildings, and in his tenure of office at St Paul’s the school became the highest achiever at A-level in the UK.
Martin is the author or editor of 23 books, ranging from academic works on history and literature to the five highly-acclaimed ‘Henry Gresham’ series of historical crime thrillers. His first play script was selected by the Australian High Commission as their act of commemoration for the outbreak of World War 1. Premiered in May 2014 with John Julius Norwich and TimMcEnnery (Captain Darling in ‘Blackadder) in starring roles, it is scheduled for several other performances.
Martin is a prolific broadcaster and writer for the UK media, and has advised successive UK Governments on education. He was instrumental in the formation of the first ‘City Academy’ in the UK, and pioneered the Independent/State Schools Partnership Forum.
In 2012 he was funded to visit any country he chose in the world to see how they educated their most able children, and is joint author with Ian Warwick of the acclaimed book ‘Educating the More Able Student. What Works and Why’. He is at present Chief Advisor to Hartland International School on its innovatory programme for gifted and talented children.
